ESST Master’s Diploma in Society, Science and Technology in Europe

ESST is an association of European universities that collaborate in teaching and research.  Of its 24 members, 14 currently collaborate to offer a joint one-year Master’s Diploma in Society, Science and Technology in Europe (60 ECTS). During the autumn term enrolled students reach the initial 30 ECTS of the diploma at one of the seven ESST universities teaching the core curriculum of the programme. Thereafter, during the spring term ESST students select an elective course at any one of our member universities or stay at their home university and complete their master’s thesis.

The ESST members currently offering the whole diploma programme (teaching the core curriculum, elective and thesis supervision) are the University of Athens, the University of Klagenfurt, the Autonomous University of Madrid, Maastricht University, the University of Oslo, the University of Strasbourg and the University of Trento.

Those members currently restricting their involvement to an elective course in the Spring term and the supervision of thesis work are Aalborg University, University of Gothenburg, Lisbon School of Economics and Management, Université Catholique de Louvain, l’Université de Namur, Tallinn University of Technology, and Nicolaus Copernicus University in Torún.

Founded in 1991 as the first European Master before the Bologna agreement, ESST has been promoting collaboration between European universities teaching and researching in social studies of science, technology and innovation for more than 30 years. Student mobility is a leitmotif of our association as we have continually enabled and encouraged our students to initiate their diploma studies at one of our member universities and complete their master’s thesis at another.

Taking advantage of our long-established collaboration in postgraduate education, ESST has in recent years developed into an active research partner in European research projects with a particular emphasis on dissemination activities. For example, ESST recently created an online educational platform for the Erasmus+ EC4 project dedicated to supporting innovative ethics education for major technological and scientific challenges.
