General Description

This specialisation focuses on the intersections and co-shaping of digital technologies and infrastructures with social, political, cultural, legal and economic circumstances, with particular interest in Artificial Intelligence, Robotics and Automation, Big Data, Social Media and the Internet of Things. It covers social practices, cultural patterns and institutional arrangements from science/technology/medicine to market/business and state/government contexts, supporting research in digital infrastructure studies and critical data and algorithm studies. Topics include Europeanization and Digitalization; Digital Economy and Entrepreneurship; Digitalization and Labor, Human Rights, Gender, Race, Disability and Surveillance; Digitalization of Culture and Digital Humanities; Digitalization and Borders and Migration; and Ethics and History of Digitalization.

Learning Objectives

Students are introduced to the main STS theories, concepts and methodologies for studying digital transformations, becoming able to retrieve the social side of digitalization initiatives, identify the economic, political and ideological dimensions of digitalization, and elaborate on its social limits.

Schedule

An intensive one-month introduction (mid-February to mid-March) combined with semester-long lectures and discussions. Depending on thesis focus, students may be hosted by NKUA’s Interdepartmental Graduate Programme ‘Science, Technology, Society’ or the European New School of Digital Studies (European University Viadrina, Frankfurt/Oder).
